All About Lammas (Lughnasadh)
August 1

It's the dog days of summer, the gardens are full of goodies, the fields are full of grain, and the harvest is approaching. Take a moment to relax in the heat, and reflect on the upcoming abundance of the fall months. At Lammas, sometimes called Lughnasadh, it's time to begin reaping what we have sown throughout the past few months, and recognize that the bright summer days will soon come to an end. While you're planning your celebrations, though, you may want to take a minute to read up on:

Rituals and Ceremonies

Depending on your individual spiritual path, there are many different ways you can celebrate Lammas, but typically the focus is on either the early harvest aspect, or the celebration of the Celtic god Lugh. It's the season when the first grains are ready to be harvested and threshed, when the apples and grapes are ripe for the plucking, and we're grateful for the food we have on our tables.

Celebrating Grain in Ancient Cultures:

Grain has held a place of importance in civilization back nearly to the beginning of time. Grain became associated with the cycle of death and rebirth... The Sumerian god Tammuz was slain and his lover Ishtar grieved so heartily that nature stopped producing. Ishtar mourned Tammuz, and followed him to the Underworld to bring him back, similar to the story of Demeter and Persephone... In Greek legend, the grain god was Adonis. Two goddesses, Aphrodite and Persephone, battled for his love. To end the fighting, Zeus ordered Adonis to spend six months with Persephone in the Underworld, and the rest with Aphrodite.

Celebrating Lammas Today:
Honoring the Past

In our modern world, it's often easy to forget the trials and tribulations our ancestors had to endure. For us, if we need a loaf of bread, we simply drive over to the local grocery store and buy a few bags of prepackaged bread. If we run out, it's no big deal, we just go and get more. When our ancestors lived, hundreds and thousands of years ago, the harvesting and processing of grain was crucial. If crops were left in the fields too long, or the bread not baked in time, families could starve. Taking care of one's crops meant the difference between life and death.
By celebrating Lammas as a harvest holiday, we honor our ancestors and the hard work they must have had to do in order to survive. This is a good time to give thanks for the abundance we have in our lives, and to be grateful for the food on our tables. Lammas is a time of transformation, of rebirth and new beginnings.

Granny's Country Store grew out of a desire to find fabulous fragrance and essential oils as well as the freshest herbs for my home use. Since I create my own candles, soaps and other "smell good things" for my family, I got quite upset when I would order an oil from someone and find out - after I'd spent my hard-earned money! - that what I received was nowhere near what I was led to believe I would get. I also wanted to use only the BEST oils and herbs for my home fragrances, natural healing, aromatherapy, teas, spellwork and rituals. After ages of searching I was able to find wholesale manufacturers and importers of top-of-the-line fragrance and essential oils. . . only to find that there was an unreasonable minimum amount I had to buy. I ran into the same problem with herb suppliers. As a result - and since there is only so much oil I can use at any one time - this store was born.

At Granny’s Country Store there are no minimum purchase requirements. You can pay online with confidence through our secure shopping cart or call your order to (985) 747-1541. We’re usually here from Monday through Saturday, 8AM to 6PM, CST.

You can rest assured that anything you buy here is of the highest quality. I NEVER dilute my oils, or short-cut on herbs. My candles and incense will have the scents you've been longing for. The resins come directly from the importer. All soaps and bath products are created in my own home and are individually packaged and labeled. You will not find any mass-produced items here.

I've been adding items for Pagan and Wiccan practitioners!

Take a look at these fabulous chalices, wind chimes, mortars and pestles, and more!

I am always getting requests for oils or herbs that I don't have and am constantly on the lookout for new items to try. So don't be afraid to ask if there is a special order you need. While I'm not always able to find every oil I will always try and I'll always let you know what I find out. So please feel free to contact me with any special needs you might have.
